EMDR

The Route You Take Is Never the Short One

An invitation lands, and before you’ve answered it you’re already working out the route.

Which street it puts you on. Who’s likely to be there.

You say yes, mostly, with a plan running quietly underneath the yes.

It happens fast enough that nobody notices it… including you.

Your Life Got Smaller and Nobody Voted on It

The memory itself has gone quiet.

What costs you now is how much of your life has arranged itself around not touching it: which people, which conversations, which version of you gets to come along.

Most people who come to us for EMDR have already done therapy, and can tell the story without flinching… and still take the long way home.

Understanding what happened turned out not to be the same thing as being free of it.

Why Your Brain Kept the Memory Live

Your brain filed that experience the fastest way it could, which was to keep it live and ready to warn you.

It left a sentence behind too, some version of you should have known, or it still isn’t safe to be here, and you’ve been living downstream of that sentence ever since.

So we start there, holding the sentence in view while your eyes follow a slow left-to-right movement, the bilateral stimulation EMDR is built on.

The sets are short, and between them we stop to ask one question: what came up? The answer keeps changing, because the work happens underneath rather than in the retelling.

None of That Starts Until Your Footing Is Steady

The uncomfortable part, said out loud: this work moves toward the thing you’ve been routing around, and the first stretch of that road is the steepest.

So we spend real time first, building enough steadiness underneath you that the harder work is safe to begin.

We use that same left and right rhythm first on what already steadies you, so your system has somewhere to return to when the work gets heavy. By the time we reach the memory, the method is familiar and the footing is yours.

And sometimes EMDR isn’t the right tool for you at all, which is something we work out with you instead of deciding for you. Either road we take, we’re watching what your ordinary days are like to live in.

An Invitation Arrives, and You Just Check the Date

When you receive the next invitation, you check the date. That’s the whole check.

The memory is still yours, and it stays yours, because taking it from you was never the point.

What changes is the price of the ordinary day: the road you can drive down, the room you can stay in, the plans you make without a second plan running underneath them.

That’s what the work aims at: your hands back on the reins, with enough road ahead of you to want things again.

Find Out Whether This Is Your Road

The free consultation is a phone call, and its only job is to hear what you’re carrying and work out whether this is the right tool for it.

We work with people in our Orem office and by video. Either way, you’d be working with one of the three clinicians on our team certified in EMDR:

Call us today at (801) 310-4192, or send a note through the contact form and we’ll reach out.

Bring the version you can say out loud. That’s enough to start.
